COMPANY PROFILE

Establishing the firm in 1993, Don was joined by Carol Sadler as a partner January 1, 2009.

The firm provides audit, accounting, tax planning and financial management skills to the owner managed business community, including analysis for the inception of a business enterprise, advantageous structuring of incorporated entities, accounting assistance, financial management assistance, corporate and personal tax and succession planning. Audit services are directed to private, non-public corporations.

All team members are readily available at all times to provide timely, accurate and practical business solutions. We take pride in our reputation as a firm which has a close personal relationship with its clients.

Our team members must have well rounded business and accounting skills so that the firm can provide both the accounting and general financial management skills necessary to the development of successful business enterprises.

The current team has a combined total of over 120 years of business and accounting experience, and include Donald and Carol, CAs, three additional CAs, two CGA graduates, one CA student and two other technicians, both being certified as bankruptcy administrators. In addition the team includes technicians who assist as required. The firm also maintains a network of highly experienced legal and cross border advisors, as needed.

Donald A Mackay, B.Sc., B.Comm (Honors), CA

Don has over 30 years of both public accounting and industry experience. In addition to the development of his own firm over the past ten years, Don articled with the firm of Price Waterhouse, was a senior audit manager for the Calgary office of Peat Marwick Mitchell and of Pannell Kerr MacGillvray in Winnipeg. He also established the MacKay Controller Group in Winnipeg, a practice devoted to the provision of controllership skills to small owner managed businesses. Don also has extensive industry experience which include acting as the Controller of a developer of commercial properties in both Western Canada and the USA, (projects ranged from small strip malls to commercial office and retail projects of up to 660,000 square feet), oil industry (financial supervision of crude oil purchases and sales of $6 billion), and as the Chief Financial Officer of a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of thermo electric generators. Prior to entering the accounting profession Don also spent a year with IBM where he trained as a systems engineer.

Carol A Sadler, B.Comm, CA, CPA (Illinois, USA), TEP

Carol is a 25 year member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, a US CPA, and holds the "TEP", or Trust and Estate Practitioner designation through STEP Canada, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Prior to joining MMS, and since 1990, Carol had developed Sadler Tax Advisors Chartered Accountants, focusing on US, cross-border and residence tax issues and providing advice on private business tax planning and reorganization, investment tax planning and accounting, oil and gas, real estate, construction and professional firms.

Deanna Stuart, B.Comm., CA

Deanna Stuart has over 20 years of public practice and industry experience. Deanna's career began at a young age working in a family owned business. Deanna attended the University of Calgary where she obtained her bachelor of commerce degree and commenced articling for Grant Thorton LLP. She was a financial analyst in the oil and gas industry as well as an audit manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers. She then made a move into industry by helping to establish a home building and renovation company in Calgary. As Chief Financial Officer of this company, Deanna managed all accounting, finance and tax planning matters. During this time, she also continued to provide public practice services to various clients.

Ryan Barrett, B.Comm., CA, CBV

Ryan Barrett began his career in 1998 as an auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Calgary, Alberta where he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation.
Moving into industry Ryan managed the tax structuring and accounting for two hotel conglomerates, one of which is listed on the TSX and has multinational operations and affiliations.
Ryan also has completed his In-depth Tax through the Institute of Chartered Accountants and holds the Chartered Business Valuator designation obtained in 2007.

Heather Kohlen, B.Comm., CA

Heather Kohlen has over 10 years of experience in public accounting. Heather graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1996, articled with KPMG and obtained her Chartered Accountant designation in British Columbia in 1999. She has experience with clients from a variety of industries, including farming, construction, retail, investing and contracting and has also done municipal auditing. Heather has extensive experience with preparing financial statements and corporate and personal tax returns. She especially enjoys dealing with issues specific to owner-managed businesses.

Mary Anne Sabourin, CGA, B.Sc. (Honors)

Mary Anne is a CGA with eight years experience in accounting and business. Since joining our firm, Mary Anne has applied her skills to the preparation of financial statements, as well as corporate and personal tax returns. She has also assisted clients with tax planning, for individuals, shareholders, and corporations. In addition, Mary Anne has been involved as a Treasurer for two non-profit organizations. She also has eighteen years experience in a medical laboratory.

Maggie Smith, CGA

Maggie Smith is a CGA with twenty years experience in accounting and business, including public practice with an emphasis on accounting for small businesses. In addition to preparing year-end financial statements, and corporate and personal tax returns, Maggie is relied on and is trusted by clientele to provide accounting assistance and tax planning throughout the year. Prior to joining the firm, she served as administrator and accountant for a software sales company having annual sales in excess of $1 million, for a private charitable foundation with a $3 million portfolio, and for a not-for-profit special education facility. She also has extensive experience in banking, property management, and teaching.

Inderjeet (Indee) Sidhu, B.Comm., B.Sc.

Indee joined our firm as an articling CA student in November of 2005. She completed her Bachelor's degree from the University of Alberta and began completing her auditing hours with the Auditor General's office participating in the audit of various government departments. Indee is looking to gain experience by working with clients in a varity of industries, as she finds assisting owner-managers withtheir businesses very rewarding.

Kate Latter, B.Comm.

Kate has joined us as an articling student. If you enjoyed watching Canada in swimming competitions you may recognize Kate as she was a member of the Canadian National Team which placed 1st in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Canadian Nationals in Synchronized Swimming.

Crystal Dobbyn

Crystal is an accounting technician with over 20 years experience in bookkeeping and accounting, of which 10 years was in the oil and gas industry. Her prior experience includes banking, oil and gas acccounting, generating and implementing safety programs, payroll, government remittances, personal tax preperation and general bookkeeping duties. Crystal has a variety of accounting, safety, management and computer courses as well as the CAPPA (Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accountants) designation. Crystal is assisting in the preperation of U.S. and Canadian personal taxes as well as the accounting and tax requirements of owner managed businesses.

Tammy Hironaka

Tammy is on the front desk/office administration team. Prior to joining Carol's team in 2003, Tammy was a tax compliance assistant with a major hotel / real estate trust group and assisted with timely filing of federal and provincial tax returns for over 30 companies within the organization. She was also responsible for administration of limited partnerships, including updating limited partner information, transfers, quarterly distributions, and annual general meeting information. Tammy has an Associate degree in History as well as her CAPPA (Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accountants) designation.

Diane Rice

Diane is our front desk/office administration assistant. Prior to joining the practice Diane had 13 years experience as a Bankruptcy/Estate Administrator and 8 years as a financial credit counselor, dealing with all aspects of financial difficulties.

Brenda J Mackay

Brenda is responsible for office administration for the practice and serves as the Accounting Software Trainer.
Prior to joining the practice Brenda had 13 years experience as a Bankruptcy Administrator handling all aspects of personal bankruptcy and corporate receiverships. She also had practiced for five years as a financial counselor dealing with financial problems resulting from gambling, alcohol, poor budgeting practices and corporate business failure.
